Wella TrendVision is one of the most iconic competitions in the hairdressings world and is judged by an international panel of leading industry professionals and hairdressing media experts.
Premier Stylist Iyla Slater, entering the competition for the first time, took Men’s Grooming to new heights for this year’s awards. Iyla was head and shoulders above the competition in the first round, being selected as one only six finalists from thousands of entries across the North.
Iyla was joined at the awards by fellow Unique Creative Team member, Hollie Lindop and Matthew Whiting who were regional finalists in the Creative Vision category.
The talented stylists had already won through fierce competition from thousands of entries across the region in the first round, each submitting a photograph of the look they had created. Having made it through they then had to recreate the style live on stage in front of a panel of judges at the regional finals in Manchester.
Matthew said “This year’s trends are really exciting and it’s all about softening strong lines and breaking the boundaries. I have taken inspiration from the gender revolution that’s taking place and blended Amish Community simplicity with Riot Girls and New Romantic. Think David Bowie and Boy George with a good pinch of feminist empowerment. “
Hollie is heading for the stars, “I wanted to create a look that was out of this world, taking the linear shapes and muted colours of intergalactic sci-fi, softening them and blending with tribal influences. I’ve used the colour to mellow a daring cut and make a positive statement.”
Here are the finished looks!

Unique are thrilled to announce the appointment of Matthew Wordsworth, who will be joining the business as the new Partner and Director of the brand’s Hessle salon.
With a career spanning over 20 years working in hairdressing, both in the UK and internationally, Matthew Wordsworth brings a wealth of experience with him to his new position.
Matthew completed his hairdressing training in Leeds with Vidal Sassoon before moving to Hull to work with Unique’s Director, Allan Smith, at former company Lifestyle. On his new challenge, Matthew says, “I can’t wait to start bouncing ideas off the stylists. I really feel like I’m going to be able to learn as much from them as they are going to from me. Allan and I go way back and it’s great to be working with him again too and following in his footsteps.”
Matthew will be joining Hessle as part of a new management team, working alongside newly appointed Salon Director/Salon Manager Ellis Roberts, who joined the company at the beginning of the year, after working as an ambassador for Wella in her home town of Malmö in Sweden, as well as working at London Fashion Week.
