Once again local talent has proved to be more than a match for the competition. Lusie Elgey, Premier Stylist at Unique Beverley has taken on the North of England’s top stylists to emerge victorious in the Regional Finals of the Wella TrendVision Awards, the world’s largest hairdressing competition.
Lusie’s success in the Creative Vision category will now see her heading to London for the National Finals in September, where she will join the best of the best in hairdressing, competing to win a place at the World Finals.
Lusie said “It was really nerve-wracking, they’ve seen your styling in pictures, but you have to create that style on a live model under the eagle eye of the judges on the night. You’ve got to make your colours and style stand out on a stage, under bright lights.”
Despite Lusie’s nerves the judges were wowed by her styling concept, which was a bold fusion of cultures, patterns and textures combined together to create a unique look. Taking inspiration from a mixture of traditional African prints, animal and snake print, Lusie’s bright bold colours remixed with earthy landscape tones made a striking colour medley which the judges loved.
Lusie’s vision was shown off on stage by her friend, Lorna Tranmer who had volunteered as her model. Lusie said “I used Lorna as my model for submitting my initial entry to the competition and she was brilliant, so I invited her to be my live model in Manchester. I’m so glad I did, she was amazing, she was so calm and cool. It was incredible seeing my ideas brought to life in that way. She’s definitely coming to London with me!”
Lusie served her apprenticeship with Unique Salons after leaving school. She went on to gain experience further afield with top stylists in London and Manchester as well as working as a stylist for London Fashion Week. Her return to her home town of Beverley saw her back behind the chair at Unique, the award winning salon group.
Lusie said “Working with Unique has been inspirational and they’ve supported me every step of the way. I love being really creative with my styling, but I’d never even considered entering such a high profile competition. The team at Unique gave me the confidence to believe in myself and try for something more. I am so pleased they did, it’s been an amazing experience so far.”
John Fallows, Salon Director at Unique Beverley said “Everyone in the salon is incredibly proud of Lusie and we’re a hundred percent behind her in preparing for the next stage of the competion. Supporting and nurturing each individual’s skills and development is key to the Unique ethos and attracts outstanding stylists to the Unique family, which of course means that our clients get the very best.”
